What is Reiki?
If you are unfamiliar with Reiki, the following information may be useful.
What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient Japanese healing modality that has been practiced for centuries for stress reduction, deep relaxation, and physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wholeness. The word Reiki may be defined as universal life force energy or spiritual energy. It is universal and spiritual because it comes from God, Source, the Universe, and is present everywhere. It is also universal in the sense that it encompasses or is concerned with the totality of life. That is, it includes the spiritual or mystical realm and the "higher areas of consciousness that are beyond ego," the earth, human beings (body, mind, spirit), and the healer ("who is located between heaven and earth and acts like a bridge to bring the wisdom, guidance, and healing of heaven down to the people and living things of the earth" (Rand, Reiki: The Healing Touch, 1991).
Reiki is a special kind of Ki that is present all around us and can be "influenced by the mind. If you have positive healthy thoughts, your Ki becomes stronger (gengki). If you have unhealthy, negative thoughts, your Ki is weakened or becomes unhealthy (byoki)" (Rand, 1991). Reiki is self-guided; it goes where it needs to go to bring healing to the individual during a Reiki healing session.
Tell me more about this life energy in the body.
An excerpt from William Rand's, Reiki: The Healing Touch, describes it best:

We are alive because life energy or Ki is flowing through us. Ki flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridians, and nadis and can also be present and pass directly through the organs and tissues of the body. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. The free and balanced flow of Ki is the cause of well-being. It is Ki that animates the physical organs and tissues as it flows through them. Ki nourishes the organs and cells of the body . . . when the flow of healthy Ki is disrupted, it causes diminished functioning within one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body . . . It is the disruption in the flow of healthy Ki that is the main cause of illness."
What are some of the benefits of having Reiki?
Reiki assists in alleviating depression about the past and fear and anxiety about the future. It helps align Chakras, clears the energy field and body from negative, toxic energy. It helps to manifest intentions and it is beneficial, in general, for helping to heal the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki, however, is not a replacement for medical care, but is a complementary healing modality. Reiki also decreases recovery time from surgery, improves mental attitude, and reduces unwanted side effects of medications and medical treatments and procedures. It also promotes emotional healing of trauma and other issues (Rand).
According to the Washington Post article, Reiki is being used by over 60 hospitals and 30,000 nurses in U.S. hospitals (Washingtonpost.com, 2014). Reiki may also be done on animals and plants.
If one is anxious about a future medical or dental appointment, or has anxiety about a future event, Reiki may transform anxiety into a positive energy of inner peace in the days prior to the event and the day of.
Reiki, coupled with self-love practices will promote healing, wellbeing, a sense of inner peace, and safety.
What happens during a session?
At your appointment, we will have a brief pre-treatment discussion about the best individualized treatment plan to assist you in your healing. We will then begin the healing session. You will lay on a massage table, in comfortable clothing and covered with a sheet/blanket and you will have a soft pillow under your head and knees for comfort. It is recommended to take several deep breaths to help relax and calm the mind and body. As a conduit for the universal life force energy, I will then begin the session with guided meditation and gently laying may hands on (or hovering them over) the main chakras of the body (located on or around the head, neck, heart, abdomen, hips, knees, and feet) with the intention of opening and harmonizing the chakras and creating a healthy flow of energy within the body so stress reduction, relaxation, and healing may occur. Depending on the agreed upon treatment plan- the session will be done in silence, with soothing healing music in the background, tuning forks, crystals, essential oils, a Tibetan singing bowl, rattle, some positive affirmations for each chakra, readings, prayer, and after-session feedback.

After the Session
Following the session, drink plenty of fluids and take a shower as soon as possible to assist in detoxing the body of any cleared negative energy.
Try this visualization when showering:
Imagine a sparkly golden light entering the top of your head, flowing through your body and washing away any negative energy from your body and out of your feet, down the drain, and into the earth where it may be absorbed and repurposed for good.
*Follow through with any recommended self-love healing practices at home.
