Premarital Counseling
Premarital Counseling
I enjoy the casual, informal meetings with my soon-to-be-wedded couple in the weeks and/or months prior to the wedding to facilitate discussions that will help me to become better acquainted with the couple, and that may help them to have a healthy marriage. Joining two lives can be challenging especially when individuals are blending families, and may have assumptions and expectations about their partner and how they will function in harmony as beloved, healthy companions.
Our conversation time will be a safe space to talk about most of the things that many married couples often find themselves struggling with even after many years of being married. Those struggles are sometimes due to never having discussed the topics listed below. We will have an open, honest conversation so that the pair of you may have a better understanding of one another's vision for marriage, and enjoy a happy, fulfilling relationship.
While I am not a professional counselor, I have a Master's of Divinity from Northeastern Seminary where I have taken courses in pastoral counseling. If there are concerns that may be better addressed by a clinical therapist, recommendations may be given. I am here to support the pair of you having a successful relationship in whatever ways that I am able.

Premarital counseling is a type of talk therapy that couples engage in before getting married to prepare them for a successful and healthy marriage. The specific topics often covered in premarital counseling may vary depending on the counselor, the couple's needs, and their specific situation, but typically include some or all of the following:
-
Communication: Effective communication is a crucial aspect of any healthy relationship, and premarital counseling often covers communication skills to help couples learn how to express themselves openly, listen actively, and resolve conflicts in a constructive way.
-
Conflict resolution: Every relationship has its challenges and disagreements, and premarital counseling can help couples learn how to manage conflicts in a way that minimizes stress and strengthens their relationship.
-
Personal and family history: Premarital counseling often involves exploring each partner's personal and family history to understand how these experiences may impact their relationship.
-
Family planning: If the couple is planning to start a family, premarital counseling may include discussions about parenting styles, responsibilities, and expectations.
-
Financial management: Financial problems are a leading cause of marital stress, so premarital counseling may include discussions on managing finances, creating a budget, and planning for the future.
-
Intimacy and sexuality: Premarital counseling may cover topics related to physical intimacy, sexuality, and the couple's sexual expectations in marriage.
-
Role expectations: Couples may have different expectations about the roles they will play in the marriage, and premarital counseling can help them explore these expectations and work together to create a shared vision for their relationship.
-
Trust and commitment: Premarital counseling can help couples explore their levels of trust and commitment to each other, and provide tools for building and maintaining trust throughout their marriage.
Overall, premarital counseling is designed to help couples establish a strong foundation for their marriage and work through any potential challenges before they arise. By addressing these important topics and developing effective communication and problem-solving skills, couples can increase their chances of a happy and successful marriage.

Personalize Your Wedding Ceremony with a Ritual
Tying of the Knot
The tying of the knot wedding ritual is a symbolic gesture that represents the binding of two lives and the creation of a new family. It is typically performed during the wedding ceremony, often as a standalone ritual or as a part of a larger ceremony.
During the ritual, the couple's hands are joined, often with a ribbon or cord, while a knot is tied around their hands. This knot symbolizes the strength and permanence of their bond and the commitment that they are making to each other.
The tying of the knot ritual has its roots in ancient Celtic, Hindu, and Native American cultures, where it was used as a way of symbolizing the joining of two families or tribes. Today, it is a popular and meaningful addition to many modern wedding ceremonies, as it provides a tangible reminder of the couple's love and commitment to one another.
Unity Sand Ritual
The unity sand ritual is a popular wedding ceremony ritual that symbolizes the coming together of two individuals and their families into one. It is often used in beach or outdoor weddings, but can also be performed in indoor settings.
During the unity sand ritual, the couple each have a vase or container filled with different colored sand. Typically, the bride has one color and the groom has another, but additional colors can be used to represent family members or children.
At a designated time during the ceremony, the couple pours their individual sand into a larger, central container, symbolizing the blending of their lives and families. The individual grains of sand mix together to form a beautiful and unique pattern that represents the couple's love and unity.
The newly blended sand can then be kept as a memento of the wedding ceremony and displayed in the couple's home as a reminder of the day they became one.
The unity sand ritual is a meaningful and memorable way for couples to symbolize the joining of their lives and families, and is a popular alternative to traditional unity candle ceremonies.
Unity Candle Ritual
The unity candle wedding ceremony ritual is a traditional and symbolic way to represent the joining of two individuals and their families into one. It is a popular ceremony that is often performed during the wedding ceremony.
During the unity candle ceremony, the couple each have a taper candle, and they use these candles to light a larger, central pillar candle. The taper candles represent the individual lives of the bride and groom, and the larger pillar candle represents the newly formed union of their lives.
At a designated time during the ceremony, the bride and groom each take their taper candle and light the central pillar candle together, symbolizing the merging of their lives and families into one. The two flames coming together to light the pillar candle represents the love and unity that the couple shares.
The unity candle ceremony is often accompanied by music, poetry, or a reading, and can also involve the participation of family members, such as the mothers of the bride and groom.
The lighting of the unity candle is a meaningful and memorable way for couples to symbolize their commitment to each other and the beginning of their new life together. It is a traditional and timeless ritual that continues to be a popular choice for couples today.
Jumping of the Broom
The jumping of the broom ceremony is a traditional African American wedding ritual that has its roots in the era of slavery in the United States. The ritual involves the bride and groom jumping over a broomstick that is placed on the ground, symbolizing the start of their new life together.
During the ceremony, a broomstick is placed on the ground in front of the couple, and they hold hands and jump over it together. The act of jumping over the broomstick represents the couple's commitment to each other and the beginning of their journey as a married couple.
The jumping of the broom ceremony has its roots in West Africa, where brooms were used in wedding ceremonies as a symbol of sweeping away past troubles and starting a new life together. The ritual was brought to the United States during the era of slavery, where it became an important part of African American wedding ceremonies.
Today, the jumping of the broom ceremony is a popular and meaningful addition to many modern wedding ceremonies, particularly for couples who want to honor their African American heritage or incorporate cultural traditions into their wedding day.
Memorial Stones
Using stones to represent dearly departed loved ones in a wedding ceremony is a meaningful and symbolic way to honor their memory and include them in the celebration. Here's how you can incorporate this ritual into your wedding ceremony:
-
Choose a special location: Select a location within the ceremony space where you will place the stones. This can be near the altar or any other meaningful location.
-
Choose the stones: Select a collection of stones in a variety of shapes and sizes. You may want to choose stones that have personal significance, such as those from a special place or that have a particular color or texture.
-
Display the stones: Place the stones in a decorative container or basket at the chosen location. You can also include a small sign explaining the significance of the stones for your guests.
-
Explain the significance: During the ceremony, explain the significance of the stones and invite guests to take a stone in memory of a departed loved one. You may want to mention specific individuals or simply invite guests to take a stone in memory of someone they have lost.
-
Incorporate the stones: There are a few ways to incorporate the stones into the ceremony. One option is to have guests place the stones on a table or in a vase as they enter the ceremony space. Another option is to have guests place the stones in a designated location as they leave the ceremony.
The use of stones in a wedding ceremony is a beautiful way to honor and remember loved ones who are no longer with us. It can bring a sense of comfort and connection to those who are present, and serve as a reminder of the love and support that exists even in times of loss.
*You can make this fun family unity activity by having children or family members decorate stones in the days prior to the wedding.
